Chapter 28

Everyone else took turns doing the most tedious chores, just like they always had.Chopping firewood was one of those things, but now that there were new fresh and able bodies around, they all agreed that it would be only fair to have people chop wood for their own houses.

That meant that while Maxim hated chopping,it was he and Noah who were doing it that afternoon.

The work was manual—they were yet to invest in a machine that would do it for them—and hard on anyone’s body.Shifters were a little bit stronger and slightly more agile than humans, but doing manual labor still taxed their reserves like it did for humans.

“Did you take a look at weather report yet?”Maxim asked Noah when they changed positions after half an hour—Noah took the axe and Maxim went to pile the wood neatly along the wall.

“No,something special?”Noah asked, making sure the piece of wood he was going to swing the axe at was aligned perfectly and wouldn’t bounce off to hurt either of them.
