Chapter 5

“Dear Family,

After a month of training?marching, and suffering nothing worse than boredom at camp,I have finally seen action. You may have heard by now about the battle at Shiloh last week.Yanks under the command of Ulysses S.Grant were surrounding the area, along with the most immense fleet of boats moving down the Tennessee River.Imagine:fourteen armed riverboats and two gunboats on our river! And then there were the steamboats—at least a hundred I’m sure—of every size. But no matter what ships or weapons those Yanks come up with,we Rebs are the better fighters. We weren’t about to let them rout us,so we attacked by surprise at dawn.
