Chapter 54

In that moment I felt a gust of wind whip around us. It danced in my hair and caressed my cheeks as if the element had joined me, adding strength to my words.

When Joan gasped again, my eyes flew open, and I could see my mother and Mathew staring at me as if I had somehow grown a second head.

My eyes widened as I began to see what they were seeing. Just as they had before when I had been trying to get through to Mathew, the elements were whipping all around me, connecting me with Grandma Joan.

I repeated the words once more with added gusto before everything in the room suddenly grew still.

Grandma Joan leaned back against the examination bed that had been propped up to help her sit more comfortably, and when her hands fell down to her sides, I saw that the bloody bandages had begun to darken as though they were drying.

“Check the wound!” my mother ordered, and it was Mathew who reached forward first to remove the bandages from his grandma’s abdomen.
