Chapter 54

“I have to go,” he said. “This was a mistake.”

I hopped up to block his exit. “No, wait, please,” I said, trying to retain my composure. Good luck with that, I figured. “I don’t want to lose you again.”

His sigh returned. “You never found me, Jack.” He pointed around the room. “This, this was all just a flashback. It’s like when you smell something and you recall something else, a memory from your past. You smell a forest, you think of camp. I’m just something that made a few brain cells go off inside your head. That’s all.”

“You don’t believe that,” I said, though it came out more like a plea.

He nodded. “I do believe that. You just don’t want to believe that.” He took hold of me. I breathed in. I smelled him. He didn’t remind me of camp; he reminded me of him. “Look, this was nice, better than nice, but I have my life, you have yours, and nice is all I can give you.”
