Chapter 22

“Ma!” Scottie came bouncing up to them.

“Hey, kiddo. Where were you?”

“In Aunt Gus’s room. She was picking out something to wear for her date tonight. I wish I was older—I’d take her out on a date. She smells nice, and she has such pretty clothes.”

Babe ruffled his brown curls. “You had a good time with her?”

“Always. Aunt Del, I drew something for you.”

“Thank you, sweetie. What is it?”

Babe was glad Delilah asked. She could never tell what it was her boy drew.

“Come on. I’ll show you.” Scottie linked his fingers with Del’s, smiled up at her, and drew her into the kitchen.

Babe smiled after them. She’d leave it to her brilliant little boy to explain whatever it was he’d come up with.

She went into the spare bedroom. Her suitcase and Scottie’s backpack were on the floor beside the bed, while his teddy bear was propped against the pillows. She picked up the bear, held it against her, and bit her lip to keep from crying. Scottie had named the teddy bear Gunther.
