“She didn’t talk to me about it. I don’t even know if she said anything to Sweets.”

He opened the drawer to his desk, withdrew a bulky leather envelope, and slid it across the desk. “Aside from a few bequests, she left the majority of her estate to you. The condo…that wasn’t in her name. The owner insisted on keeping everything, even if it was pink, so the boys and I got into the condo before he changed the locks and gathered up what we could of her personal belongings.”

“It doesn’t matter.” Something about that sounded off, but Babe was too depressed and distressed to try to figure it out. “We can’t take anything with us.” She took the envelope and opened it. There was a handful of credit cards, but it was the amount of cash it held that made her gasp and raise her gaze to stare wide-eyed at Charles.
