Instead, I discovered something that had me chuckling, and I decided Mark had to have this as well. I picked up not quite the meanest-looking T-Rex I’d ever seen and ran a finger over its head and down its neck and back to the polka dot undershorts that covered its rump. Yes, Mark was going to love the hell out of this.

Holding on to the little stuffed dinosaur, I walked down another aisle, and finally found something that would be perfect for Gregor: an ebony inlaid rosewood box of dominos. It would provide him and Mother with a way to pass the time in the evening.

About twenty minutes later, the shopkeeper summoned me to the front counter and showed me what he had done, then packed up the wind chimes and rang up the new purchases.

“Thank you again,” I said. We shook hands, and I returned to my hotel and placed the gifts in my carry-on.
