Chapter 51

“I’m not a baby.” He retrieved the sketchpad and took a pencil from a zippered compartment in the front of the backpack.

“In that case, sit there.” He pointed toward the chair opposite his desk.

The boy scowled at him but did as ordered. He turned to a blank page, and after a moment, his gaze seemed to become blank. Then he began to draw.

Wallace observed him for a little while before he turned to his computer and accessed Mark’s file. Considering the boy’s age, Wallace decided 1993 would be a good year to start with. He began scrolling through the records of Mark’s operations.

Hmm. He’d forgotten Mark had been in Panama that January. This was interesting, although hardly germane. What was germane was that before Mark had returned to the States, the WBIS had learned of the kidnapping, torture, and murder of Ed Chen, his partner, and had forwarded the news to him. Mark, in turn, had informed them he’d retrieve Chen’s body. That time frame might be feasible.
