Chapter 109

Quinn’s expression became hooded. “You’re going to check it out?”

I poked his shoulder. “We’re going to check it out. But first we have to stop at headquarters to pick up some supplies. There are a couple of things I want to do while we’re there as well. I want to talk to those jokers from last night.”

He studied my face. “What is it, Mark?”

I didn’t ask what he meant. I knew he could see something was bothering me. “It used to be easy, you know? There used to be just me dealing with shit, and I never had to worry about anything. Then there was you, but I could trust you to take care of yourself. With the kid, though…”

“We could take him with us to headquarters, I suppose, or we could leave him with Theo or with Portia and Novotny…”

“Mother would be delighted to keep an eye on Joe for a few hours.”

“I hate asking her to do this, but things might get a little hinky at headquarters, and I’m not sure I want to bring him there.”
