Chapter 123

“When I got off the train, I was met by Deuce. He was Doctor Gautier’s head of security, and no one knew if he even had a last name. The man had cold eyes, and not to be crass, but he scared the piss out of me, even though he never made a move on me. Maybe he was gay. Maybe I just wasn’t his type. But whatever the reason, I thanked God.

“Once we got to what turned out to be Dr. Gautier’s house of horrors, he turned me over to Finchley…”

Mark looked up and met my eyes. “Finchley again. I really want to have a talk with him.”

“And we will.”

“I’ll resume deciphering the rest of it tomorrow,” Mother said.

“Thank you.” Mark glanced at the last page Mother had given him and nodded to himself. “This looks like it covers the period of time until she had to run with Joe.”

“Yes. That poor woman.” Mother was silent for a moment, then sighed. “Shall we see what Gregor and Joe have been doing to amuse themselves?”
