Chapter 26

The radio that had been playing earlier was silent.

Nobody roamed the hall. Carlo stepped carefully across the divide, grateful for the carpet absorbing the sound, to lean closer to Monica’s door. It was quiet within, too, and he edged back, frowning at her room. Could she have left without his knowing? Joe had tasked him with a single duty. The elevator dinged. Carlo darted away to hover in his doorway, relaxing only when Joe’s familiar form emerged. In spite of his anxiety, he smiled. He wasn’t sure if he’d ever be able to look at Joe again without grinning like a loon.
