Chapter 33

“What about Emmett’s?” Though Wallace would have already figured out it was one of Emmett’s if it was, Joe knew for a fact that there’d been three in his possession when he died. The police got theirs back. One went to the family. Joe had the third. The fact that Copper was now lying about the family’s didn’t bode well.

Copper shook his head. “Mom got rid of that after you enlisted. She said she hated having it around. It reminded her too much about what happened.”

The story was as viable as any. Emmett’s murder had hit his mother hard.

“The cops have the gun,” Joe said. “They’re already tracing it.”

“It’s not mine. I swear it.”

“They’ve got more than that, though. They picked up Monica Halford tonight.” He’d debated sharing that particular detail with Copper, but considering the scope of how this was playing out, Copper needed to know.

From the look on his face, that was the last thing he expected to hear. “How’d they even know about her?”
