Time stood still. It was the only plausible explanation Max could come up with as to why Quam wasn’t slaughtering Bair right this second.

“That’s it, Max.” The burning started at his neck when Bair bent down and touched his lips to his exposed skin. “You flush so easily.”

Flush? Blisters were forming within seconds.

“I have to be more careful. Last time...” Bair sighed. “He wasn’t as pretty as you. Bigger, his skin paler, but oh the sounds he made.”

Max shivered.

“It was an accident. I intended to keep you for myself and let him go, but yeah... I have promised them one human, and I can’t back out of a deal. His word is all a pirate has.” He chuckled right next to Max’s ear.

“Quam—”

“Shh...” Bair trailed a finger over the blisters his kiss had left, the burning taking Max’s breath away.
