Chapter 8

Wednesday

BEFORE HE TURNED off the motor,Josh allowed Rex to do his thing;and when Rex’s wagging tail signaled the all clear,he turned the key and exited the van.Jake followed him out of the vehicle.

Josh opened the rear doors of the van, removed a plastic bag,and handed it to Jake.“If you need to make a pit stop,go behind the house.Just watch where you squat, and go easy on the toilet paper—it’s in short supply.”

Jake handed the bag back to Josh.“Thanks, but all I need to do at the moment is numberone.”

“Then have at it.Meanwhile,I’ll put our lunch together.”

When Jake returned from taking care of business,he found several sandwiches laid out on a small plastic cloth.Next to them were a couple of bottles of water.

“Looks good,”he said.“What are they?”
