Chapter 30

“I don’t want to hurt anyone.” The vampire took a step to the side, and another, using Agnes as a shield.

“Let the captain go, coward,” Nigel taunted. “You don’t want to hurt anyone? The hell you say. I saw you. Gonna feed on the doctor, were you?”

“I…well, probably, yes. Have you not smelled it, the sweetness, the most wondrous scent of food and drink, and yourself starving? Have you not longed for it? I could not help it. It’s been months since blood so rich has crossed my lips. I’m quite hungry, you see.” The revenant leaned down, pressed his lips against Agnes’s throat, licking at the flesh there. Agnes shivered. Through the layers of her shift and shirt and coat, Nigel saw her nipples peak as she moaned with sudden, sensual onslaught.

The vampire swallowed air, gasping. His eyes shone like gaslamps in the darkness. “You aren’t afraid?”
