Chapter 46

The three men left the hotel to find the snow was letting up, although it was still fiercely cold.

“Why the hell did I leave New Orleans?” Galvez muttered.

“I wonder that, too, sometimes, when the weather’s like this,” Dirk admitted. “But all things considered, I’d say it was worth it. At least for me.” He wrapped an arm around Maverick.

Galvez looked at them then, chuckling. “Unless you’re just using him to keep warm, I’d say so. Before you ask, I’m New Orleans born and bred. That doesn’t bother me at all.”

Maverick’s look and tone of voice were caustic as he replied, “Hadn’t better.”

They continued walking, going toward the more residential area of Cherry Creek. Finally Galvez asked, “What do you do now, Dom? Or should I call you Dan?”

“Either/or for now,” Dirk told him. “I work for…” He was about to say ‘a pawnshop’ then decided not to give out that information since he still wasn’t totally certain he trusted Galvez. “For myself.”
