Chapter 17

Darren was waiting outside of the school when I pulled up.

“Thanks again for the ride,” he said after he’d gotten into the car.

“You’re welcome,” I said. “Just tell me where I need to go.”

Darren gave me directions to the garage that was in Rogers Park, not far, he informed me, from the house he and Carlos used to share. During the drive, I wanted to ask him why he was still having Carlos do work on his SUV, but I didn’t. Instead, I asked if there was going to be any problem with me accompanying him to Carlos’s garage. The last thing I needed was a confrontation with an angry ex.

“No,” Darren said. “Carlos knows you’re bringing me to get the Blazer. I called and told him we were coming.”

Great,I thought. So Ricky Martin will be waiting to bash my head in with a tire iron.

“I just don’t want any trouble,” I told him.

“There won’t be any trouble,” Darren said and I started to relax until he added, “unless Carlos decides to make some.”
