“…I loved Frank and I thought he’d love me forever like he kept telling me he would. But his family wouldn’t have it. They worked him hard as a horse. And he forgot about me. Didn’t want to have anything to do with me. When I told him I had his baby, he…he…” She sniffed hard. “I just wanted him to know about our child. If he didn’t want it, that was fine. I didn’t want anything from him, I swear.”
Lucian’s heart clenched at her story. Was it true? Had his uncle become such a monster? He reached out to her. Spirit or no spirit, she was a victim here and his heart went out to her.
“Never mind, then. I get to keep his handsome nephew—what are you doing? I told you I intended you no harm but you’re just the same.” She slapped his hand away and pounced down that very second, squeezing Lucian’s neck with her sheer, flimsy, but God-awful strong hands.
