Chapter 23

Eli laughed. “Yes and no. Yes, I can live a very long time. And no, there are certain things that can kill me, I suppose. I guess if a human cut off my head, I could die. I’ve never heard of any Nephilim dying that way. But the flaming sword of an angel—the same type that is mentioned in the Garden of Eden—can banish evil spirits and kill Nephilim. Imprisonment in rock will not kill me but will cut off air and even I need air to breathe. That’s how some Nephilim have been trapped. They lay asleep under several miles of mud and bedrock after the Great Deluge. Fire can hurt me but I would eventually heal. So you see I can live a very long time and as long as I—”

“Wait, how old are you?”

“I stopped growing at the age of twenty-five. My mother said all Nephilim stop aging at twenty-five unless—”

“Unless?”

“Unless they ignore the prohibition against eating meat, flesh, or blood.”
