Chapter 15

Liddy kept up a running dialogue on the traffic and the sights, or lack of them, we passed, until we were at the outskirts of Beaumont. Then she spotted a café which was open all night, according to the sign, and decided we needed to pick up something to eat since it would probably be the last chance until morning. At Duff’s suggestion, we opted for take-out rather than wasting time eating inside. I pulled into the lot and he and Liddy went in to get sandwiches and drinks for all of us.

“I know this makes me sound weak,” Ian said, resting his arms on the back of the front seat, “but I’m scared. It’s fine to talk about what we’ve got planned, but when it comes down to the real thing…”

“Fear is what keeps you, us, from getting arrested. It gives us an edge.”

“You don’t seem like you’d be afraid of anything.”
