Chapter 24

“I am. I want to make certain you’re not going to do something you shouldn’t,” I replied.

“Who are you to ask or stop me?”

I countered with, “How recently were you turned that you don’t know?”

His eyes widened as he backed away. “You’re…like me?”

“I am. A hell of a lot older and wiser, but yeah, I am.”

He swallowed hard. “I wasn’t going to do anything. I was just…”

“Looking for something to eat and missed all the restaurants on Frenchman?”

He tried for bravado, replying, “Yeah, and what business is it of yours anyway?”

“It’s the business of every vampire who lives in the city and doesn’t want our presence known to humans. You do notfeed from the living. Didn’t your Sire teach you that?”

“No. Well yes, but…” He looked down, shaking his head.

“Yes?”

“I was only with him for a month and then he was gone.”

“That’s impossible. Every Sire has to keep his Child close for a year.”
