“Besides the half a day wasted not traveling? Three hundred dollars.”
“Three hundred dollars? That’s fifty percent more than usual!” Frank said.
“I know. The guy said the closer to Kansas City we go, the more expensive it will be.”
“That’s not right, taking advantage of these farm families. We have the money, but many people going west have sold everything they have. What would they have done in this situation?”
“I guess what we would have done if we were in the same situation: found some work until we had the money to move on.”
“Well, it’s still not right.”
“We won’t be verifying what he said. We’re going to go west of the city to avoid anybody else. And now we have Sally to protect the horses, the wagon, and us.”
“What should we call them?”
“How about Dove and Daisy? That was the name of my favorite team when I was growing up,” Gregory said.
“Dove and Daisy it is, then. You ready to eat so we can get going?”
“Yeah.”
