Chapter 47

Frank’s temper got the best of him. “What are you doing? Don’t you see we’ve got crops planted there?”

“Well, well, well,” sneered Phillip Bernard. “If it isn’t you two.” He paused dramatically. “How nice that we meet again.”

“What is going on here, Bernard?” Gregory blurted out.

“You’re Mr. Young, if I remember right.”

Phillip Bernard paused, and Gregory nodded to answer him.

“We are surveying land for the Leavenworth, Lawrence, and Galveston Railroad Company. That railroad is going to come right through here from Leavenworth, Kansas, and go all the way to Galveston, Texas.”

Frank’s eyes narrowed as he asked suspiciously, “And where are your papers, your orders?” After the incident near St. Joseph, Frank didn’t trust Phillip Bernard at all.

“Johnson, go grab the orders from my saddlebag and get back to work.”
