His sleep was fitful as he considered the Phillip Bernard situation. What the hell did they do? Why had he continued to harass them, even after the deal with the Indians was off? Could one person be so unhappy with his own life, so jealous of what Frank and Gregory had, that he was hell-bent on destroying that? Just out of spite?
After sleeping for a short time and tossing and turning for another couple of hours, Gregory decided to set out for home. Eager to get home and share the news with Frank, Gregory pushed Daisy nearly as hard as he did when he went to town. The prospect of a new settlement, only a day’s travel from home, spurred some hope that a land office would be established, especially if it was a county seat. Their hard work had not been in vain after all.
