“We’ll always be in each other’s business,” was all he could come up with after a while, but the truth of it landed between them. “The distance hasn’t been reached yet that would keep me from knowing exactly what’s going on in your life twenty-four-seven, I’m sorry to inform you,” he said quietly. “And besides, who’s to say you don’t get that Columbia scholarship, right? Then we’ll be at the same school and it will be exactly like it is now. Only we’ll make frequent trips back home to visit Uncle Jake.”

Brian covered his eyes with his hand. “I was such a dick to Uncle Jake.”

“Yes, you were.”

Brian scoffed.

He smiled down at Brian. “But luckily for you, we know the real you and love you.”

“Guess I was right,” Brian said after a moment.

“Right? About what?”

“It isn’t easy at all. I knew it wouldn’t be. But you still hold out some hope, you know? Or you like to believe you’re a better person than that, a stronger person.”
