Chapter 67

“He called me yesterday,” Matt said, trying to be helpful. “He wanted my advice on something. I arranged to meet him this morning,” he said, guilt evident in his voice, “but he never showed.”

Mrs. Sterling placed her palms onto the couch and squeezed the cushions, tensing her shoulders and pushing her frame even tighter. When she looked up at him again her eyes were shiny. “Did you know?”

“Know about what, ma’am?”

“That Sterling finally intended to tell his father about himself.”

Matt sat staring at her in disbelief as realization dawned. Blood escaped his head and dizziness took control. “He did what?”

“He told us last night he’d met someone who’d given him the courage to finally accept himself. And that he is tired.”

Matt’s snapped his mouth shut. He looked at this woman who was exposed to the bone before him and couldn’t form a coherent thought to comfort her.

“Tired?” he repeated.
