Chapter 30

His second afternoon appointment was Ralph Waterhouse, a middle-aged bisexual with cirrhosis. Ralph sometimes believed he was being followed by aliens. He told Jax, “I can feel them behind me, and sometimes I can see them. They follow me to church or the grocery store. Three lifeforms take note of my every waking minute. I’m not really sure what they want from me, but I think it could be dangerous. I’m haunted by them. They watch me shower or sit and read. They follow me outside to the garden and study how I pick roses or plant hydrangeas. I’m glad they don’t talk to me. That would put me right over the edge if they did. That’s one thing I don’t think I could ever handle.”
