“He’ll be away for such a long period of time…” Barbara’s eyes were already welling with tears, and Jamie wasn’t to leave for another few days.

Sky slid an arm around her waist. “It’s only fair, darling. We’ve had all this time with him. And besides, you’ll have our boys to keep you busy.”

“All right, Sky. But please, James,” Barbara begged. “Please make sure he doesn’t get in with the wrong crowd.”

“He’s going to Eton—there’s nothing butthe right crowd there.”

“You know what I mean! Keep him away from people whose skin is—” She shuddered. “—darker than ours.”

“But Barbara, your skin is darker than mine.”

“Not amusing, James!”

“I apologise.”

Muffled laughter came through the open French doors that lead onto the terrace. Barbara spun around in her seat, appalled. “James Stuart Trevalyan! Come in here this instant!”

Jamie came into the room, trying for a look of innocence and not quite succeeding.

“Sorry, Mum, but Papa’s right. Even I’mdarker than he is!”
