Chapter 41

“What about you?” Joe asked, aware of the sudden sadness in Dubois’s eyes. “What was your happiest Christmas Eve?”

“I don’t know. I don’t think I was ever happy.”

Joe leaned in across the space between their bunks and reached out, pinching Dubois’s toe. “Tell me.”

“I wish I’d have known you, I mean reallyknown you, when we were both free men.”

Joe didn’t like the gloom in Dubois’s voice. He stood and crossed over to his bunk. “Move over.” He sat by him, leaning up against the wall. “Want me to read to you?”

“They’re going to blow out the lights any minute now.”

Joe leaned into his ear. “Yeah? So, then I’ll make you warm again.”
