“Do you want the last of this?” Dubois handed him the cigarette. He coughed into his arm and walked over to where Joe stood looking out through the bars.

Dubois’s profile was tense with restrained fury. “Oh, I think I’d much prefer it if they’d just set us out to work in the woods today.”

“You need to rest. You’re in no condition to be out there. And besides, maybe you won’t even have to go out there anymore. Maybe Victor is on his way right now―”

“Oh, that name.” Dubois shut his eyes, leaning his head to a bar. “His very name makes me sick.”

“Well, he’s your ticket outta here.” Joe knew Dubois needed to relieve the tension somehow, and he couldn’t give him what he needed. No, not with the guards making their constant rounds. They couldn’t do that. So, they’d fight instead. “Stop being such a kid over it.”
