Chapter 54

Joe had already spotted Guard Dawson glancing their way, suspicious. He turned his attention back to Levin. “It’s not Christophe’s responsibility,” he told Levin.

Why should Christophe care? Christophe was a free man now, and he was young, with places to go and people to meet. Why should he risk getting caught up in all of this again?

“What’s Linhart to him now?” Joe asked, shrugging. “A faraway place where―”

“Where youare.” Levin raised a brow. “That’s why.”

“No, don’t count on that.” Joe didn’t want to talk about this anymore. Christophe wasn’t their savior. He was out there surviving another type of prison life. Had Christophe been banished to those dark corners he’d whispered about? Had he found a new lover to help him bear the cross of his nature? And if so, was that man kind to him?

Did Christophe ever miss his hands in the night?

“I wish you wouldn’t bring him up,” Joe whispered, his throat clenching.

Novak frowned at him, but quickly looked down into his plate.
