Chapter 18

Signs of early behavior, cerebral, or speech intercessions could assist in clinically diagnosing an autistic child. Specific flags included lack of smiling, joylessness, and limited speaking skills. Anxiety and frustration were common among autistic people. Word retrieval was difficult, an inability to form full sentences and sounds, and misunderstanding idioms or sarcasm was usual. Every child advanced differently, and signs contrasted. Other signs included lack of eye contact, inability to follow objects visually, inability to make noises to gain attention, lack of desire to play with other kids or experience mutual interests, and not asking for help regarding basic requests. Nonfunctional routines, the act of repeating actions or behaviors that seemed to not have a purpose or reason, did occur in autistic people.
