“Why’d you come out to see me?” he mumbled.

“Coincidence,” Nick said, holding the door to the pub. It was a quiet street-corner type; the barman looked even younger than Tab, high-fived Nick wordlessly, and nodded at the Fosters pump. “Yeah, go on, Rob. Cheers. Nah, coincidence,” Nick repeated. “Was going to the canteen actually. Hospital air makes me thirsty.”

“Alcoholic.”

“Working on it,” Nick grinned. Tab’s heart skipped a beat. Maybe two. Three. Okay, whatever, it went for a full-on attack. “Actually, I was gonna tell you something next time I saw you, tried to at the interclub, but fuck it. Not the time now.”

“Next time?”

“Yeah, next time. If you don’t run away again. Cheers,” Nick handed him a pint, and clanked the glasses. “So what’s wrong with your mum?”
