“No, thanks. This is my punishment for being so careless.”

I know the feeling, “All right. I’d better get to these berries.”

I remembered the day Katie got a job in Hartford. She’d be a research tech in a local hospital. That was what she was trained to do.

“Honey! I got the job!” She stood there as I came home from work. The glowing smile on her face told me how good the job was.

“Wonderful. Where?”

“I’ll be working at the university medical center, and I’ll be making more than I did in New Haven.”

I pulled her into my arms and kissed her.

“We should celebrate,” I said. “Come, I’ll take you out to dinner.”

“Can we afford Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse?”

“We can afford anywhere you want to go.” I grinned.

“Can we go to Paris?” she asked.

“Paris? Not this year, maybe next.” I was ready to promise her anything she wanted.
