Gran was horrified. “In the dark? What if you’d fallen in? You might have drowned.”
“The coolness of the water would have been better. I wasn’t worried about it.”
“Sally would have been,” Gran said as she came over and sat in the rocking chair. “She was quite upset. She wants to apologize.”
I shook my head. “Apologize? She doesn’t need to apologize.”
“She thinks she does.”
I just sat there.
“At least listen to her,” Gran urged me. “She listened to you.”
I let out a soft laugh. “I don’t think she heard me, though.”
“She heard. She didn’t know how to respond.”
I turned and looked at Gran. “Did she tell you what we fought about?”
“She tried not to, but I guessed.”
I was astounded. “You guessed?!”
“I’ve known since you were little,” Gran said softly. “You can’t hide it.”
I was confused. “Howdid you know?”
“I have eyes in the back of my head.”
I wasn’t ready to joke about it. “No. Really.”
