Chapter 4

“You okay?” Eddie asks.

“Just tired. Been working a lot. I’ve got a cold coming on.”

As they step onto the sidewalk, a gust of December air whips at them, and Eddie slips a casual arm over Josh’s shoulder. They walk down the street, brushing up next to each other.

Josh feels a growing urgency swelling inside him. His skin prickles with heat against the chilly night.

Ten minutes later, a half-mile from Red Maple Apartments, Josh asks Eddie, “Shouldn’t we be walking on the other side of the street?”

“Nobody but us out here.”

“Cars tend to speed down this road at night.”

“Your Casper the Ghost pullover will warn them.” Eddie turns away from Josh and Josh hears him snickering.

Josh says, “This was a high school graduation gift from my grandmother. It keeps me warm.”

Eddie nudges Josh in the side with an elbow. “I’m teasing you, man.”

Their laughter livens up the night.
