He mouths the words. “Give him space.”
She pats Stephen on the arm, as if reassuring him everything will be all right. “Yes, darling. But I think our son has forgotten what we taught him. I want what’s best for him. He’s our only child.”
“You raised him with dignity, Lynn.”
She pecks Stephen on the cheek, “So did you, sweet man. He is a fine, young man.”
“Um, hello? Mom. Dad. I’m standing right here. And this is getting seriously awkward.” Josh looks to Eddie winking at him. Fletcher is splayed out on the futon; Eddie scratches his dog’s belly.
Quickly changing the subject, Lynn announces, “Over calzones, pasta, and the finest bottle of Merlot, I want to hear how Eddie came into your life and made my son the happiest man in the world.”
“Mom, come on. You’re making me feel five years old.”
“Now, J, I can see the happiness in your eyes. There is something happening here.” She admonishes both Josh and Eddie with a motherly smile.
“Mom, this is really uncomfortable.”
