“How did Ruth take it?” Cam asked.

He took a deep breath. “She almost came through the phone,” he told her. “I feel really sorry for whoever was with her last night, or if there’s someone she’s angry with.”

“Yes. I know what she can do.”

Blake shook his head. “Yes. That face is terrifying.”

“How did they find out?” Cam asked. “I’m always careful to look for anyone following me, especially if a car’s been behind me for more than five minutes. I didn’t see anyone. If someone’s been tracking us, they must have done it in staggered shifts.”

Blake nodded. “What kind of car do you own?” he asked.

“A Toyota Corolla,” she answered.

“That won’t fit through those trees, will it?”

“I doubt it, and it doesn’t do well over rocks and tree roots either. It’s only a two-wheel drive.”

“Damn!” He thought for a moment, then he went into another room. He was in there for a few moments. He came back holding a fistful of cash.
