Chapter 4

I sighed. “I understand.”

Marcy led us to Jonah’s room and left us alone. I stood beside Jonah’s bed, and Nicholas stood on the other side of it. Jonah was asleep and hooked up to all kinds of monitors. He looked so frail against the pillows and sheets. The brown age spots were stark against the paleness of his weathered skin.

“I knew it would come to this,” I said after a while. “I just didn’t think it would happen this fast.”

“Yeah.” I looked up to see Nicholas’ eyes focused on me. “You’ve done all you could, Lanice.”

I wasn’t sure about that, but Jonah deserved some peace of mind and a little dignity for his remaining years on this earth. It was the least I could do for someone I considered family.

By the time I got home, it was after nine and I was hungry. The place was pretty quiet since everybody had either gone to their homes in town, or retired to their bunks, for the hands who stayed on the ranch. Ernie lived in the foreman’s house.
