Chapter 9

Daniel’s fingers were already exhausted. He could barely keep his head above the water. He tried to reach up for a better hold, but couldn’t support himself one-handed. More branches battered against him on their way downstream, making him flinch and lose focus. His torso was next to disappear under the bridge. He was hanging on by his fingertips. He sputtered and coughed up the water he inhaled with each stolen breath. This was it. He was dying. All my bad luck has led to this. If I have any good luck left at all, they’ll find my body before I get too far away.

The dam around his emotions broke completely. He sobbed, the tears washed away as soon as they left his eyes. Mom will be devastated, losing her husband and son in the same year. Cole…maybe Cole will care, but I’ll never see him again. At least I’ll be with Dad.
