I need to ask Helen to add more starch to my shirts. He considered his housekeeper more a big sister than an employee, but he would never talk to her about this.

Eron opened the door to the banquet hall for Garrett. His face grew warm when he realized what he did.

Get it together, Lassiter. Why does this have to be so difficult? Just a little bit ago you were the instigator of this whole thing and now…

He didn’t know what. They walked through the door to find the girls alone in the banquet room. Everyone else had gone. Eron hadn’t even noticed how many cars were left in the parking lot when they walked back. The only sound was the clink and clank of dishes as the employees cleaned up after the reception.

“Well, we’re glad you could make it back in time to take us home,” Mary Ellen whined. She nursed yet another cocktail.

“Garrett, where have you been?” Johnette’s voice filled the large, empty room. “You left me here alone and I don’t know anyone,” she said quieter than before.
