Chapter 10

“Damn,” groaned Asa, his sticky hand finding Levi’s. “Leave something for later.”

Levi grinned and released him, then eased back and pulled out. He tossed the lambskin into the corner where it would be cleared away when shoveling out the manure and sprawled down next to Asa, who side-eyed him.

“I don’t normally do pillow talk,” he said.

“What’s normal for you anyway?” asked Levi. “I’m tired.”

Asa laughed and struggled to sit up, Levi putting a hand to his back to help.

“Thanks,” he said, rummaging around until he pulled out a small leather-wrapped toolkit. He bent over toward his mechanical leg and began removing panels on it with one of the items he pulled from it.

Levi watched for a time, yawned, and leaned back, closing his eyes. He had almost drifted off when Asa spoke.

“You know how many people are turned off by that?”

Levi tore himself from the brink of sleep and tried to figure out whether he had missed some earlier statement.
