“The truth is I want you,” Rocco said.

“How could I not fall for you—and quickly? You are a wonderful, sweet, charming man,” Dirk declared.

“What am I watching here?” Captain Pinkerton wasn’t the only one confused. The expressions in the room and the hallway all matched his, except for Ridley’s, who smiled, and Sergei’s, who seethed.

“We can be together now,” Rocco said. “Come away with me!”

“No!” Sergei pulled a gun from his waistband. “I did not go through all of this to lose you to him!”

“Everyone down!” Pinkerton drew his weapon as Rocco spun Dirk out of the line of fire just as several shots rang out—shots meant for him.
