Chapter 6

“Before Hercules kicked you, you never hit on me. You didn’t have an interest in me. I was just your help. Someone to care for the Palominos. You’re straight, Pax. You’ve always been straight. You used to drive to Tulsa to meet a woman before your injury. Her name was Tracy. You spent long weekends with her. It was private and—no one ever asked you about it. It was your personal life off the ranch. It was your business. None of us had any right to ask you about your time with her.”

He looked confused and shook his head. “Tracy?”

“Yeah, Tracy. You visited her twice a month, maybe more. I don’t know anything about her. None of us here on the ranch does. That was your business, not ours. There’s a line between employer and employees, and none of your help, which includes me, crossed it. We respected you, and we all still do today, after the accident. Do you understand that?”
