I was no deadbeat, but you already knew that I wasn’t lugging around a big sack of money in my suitcase. I let Thumper pay for our entire Jacksonville stopover. Considering that he had been borrowing my husband for the last few weeks, I figured we had a ways to go to square up, even if we were gonna count sharing the car as a pretty big favor. 7

“So, here’s kind of the thing,” Thumper said, settling into a confidential tone. He looked around, as if for spies, and continued. “I don’t have any money.”
