She laughed through the tears and swiped at her cheek again with the back of her hand. “How did you know?”

“I didn’t,” I admitted. “But I did the math and took a stab. I can’t really picture you with Hunter. You should have told me.”

She laughed again. “Should I have? And pray tell, Fox, how? You were gone. Vanished into thin air, the way people talked about it. I waited for you to come home, just like Berger did, but it never happened. No call, no forwarding address, no nothing. By the time we were all on Facebook and all that shit he was a grown man. At that point I didn’t care if you ever knew. Why should I share him with you now that he’s grown into such a great kid? You weren’t around for any of the hard stuff, why should you get the good stuff? I sure wasn’t going to tell you before you left.”

“Does he know?”

“No. The whole town assumes he’s Hunter’s, and Hunter hasn’t said anything. People see what they wanna see, so what do I care?”
