The previous evening my son, Ross, was fishing in a nearby pond on the golf course behind the house. As he settled onto the bank with his rod and reel, he observed a baby alligator sliding into the water. When he cast his lure, a big adult gator broke surface and lunged at my son’s bait.
Unaware of this, I had brought Scamp out for a walk on his leash, hoping to sit with Ross while he fished. But from a hundred yards away, Ross waved his arms frantically and shouted, “Don’t bring him any closer! There are two alligators in the pond!”
Shortly after this, Ross came home.
You will now understand the terrifying thoughts flying through the family’s head when Scamp broke free that morning! Seriously ill, and having used all his energy to crash through the mesh, he was in no state to outrun a gator, even if he saw it in time.
