Chapter 31

“You are right! This is insane!” Seth exclaimed, removing his hat and running a hand through his long blond hair. “I have thought of you so often since that day I left St. Bartholomew’s, wondered what had happened to you and where you were. I wrote to Reverend Perkins around the time I thought you were to come of age, asking him to let me know what situation he had found for you. But it was Mr. Howard who answered, saying Reverend Perkins had suddenly taken ill and died. He, Mr. Howard, was now headmaster.”

“God have mercy on those poor souls,” Thor said, remembering the cruelty of the man who had been the wing supervisor.

“Yes,” Seth agreed. “Mr. Howard said you had left a month before and he had no knowledge of where you had been sent.”

“The bastard,” Thor growled. “He knew very well where Reverend Perkins had found a place for me! I told him myself!”

“I gave up all hope of ever seeing you again,” Seth concluded.
