With a shrug, I admitted, “Probably not, but she needs to know. I don’t want her wondering after we’ve left—”

“So we’re going, then,” he said.

I glanced past him at the screen, but it remained dark, the light above it off. Safe, I thought.

Beside me, Kyer sighed. “For real. Okay. So I should probably say something to Lyra, too.”

“Wouldn’t you want to know?” I asked. “I mean, if she liked someone else?”

He thought about it a second, then nodded slowly. “Yeah, I guess I would. It’s only right. I started putting a few things away last night, just in case. Some food, some clothes, stuff like that.”

“Good idea.” I would do the same, maybe get a bag together before heading over to Brin’s. Like Kyer had said, just in case.

We descended the stairs to the ground, our hands still laced together. When we reached the last step, I shook free so no one would catch us. I threw one last look over my shoulder at the screen to make sure the light was still out.
