??You have a beautiful home,?? I finally choked out.

??It??s a rental,?? he admitted. ??I haven??t decided if I want to buy out here yet. After the bath I took on the condo, I??m not anxious to jump into another mortgage.??

Hearing that he??d sold the condo at a loss didn??t surprise me. The real estate market was shit pretty much everywhere. Before I moved out, I??d briefly entertained the idea of staying at the condo myself, but the place held too many ugly memories for me. Besides, there was no way I would have been able to afford the mortgage on my own.

??I need a beer,?? Jay said. I watched his bare feet carry him into the kitchen and heard him ask from there if I was sure I didn??t want one.

??No,?? I said. ??Thanks.??

When he returned a few seconds later with a bottle of Heineken, I regretted not asking for one for myself. He dropped onto the sofa and took a swig before placing the bottle on the table.
